Billionaire CEO of Tesla and Twitter, Elon Musk, plans to create his own artificial intelligence (AI) tool to compete with Microsoft and Google, as he continues to promote a campaign alongside other prominent business and political figures about the dangers posed by this technology to humanity.
Musk wants to create a “third option” to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is backed by Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc.’s DeepMind. – Google. As he did with Twitter, Musk appears to be thinking of using his tool for a political purpose, as he sees ChatGTP as having a liberal bias that needs to be countered.
AI could destroy humanity
The controversial South African-born businessman, however, has yet to reveal details of the advanced AI system he seeks to create. During an interview this week on Fox News in which he spoke at length on the subject, Musk said AI was “more dangerous” than cars or rockets.
He argued that if its unbridled development is not curbed, artificial intelligence has the potential to cause the destruction of humanity. Advances in this area of technology are controlled for now by two of the world’s leading technology companies, Microsoft and Google. “Two heavyweights,” Musk claims.
Recently, the Twitter CEO registered X.AI, the new artificial intelligence company based in Nevada, which would have the responsibility to develop the AI tool. In parallel, he signed an open letter published by Future of Life Institute asking to pause for six months the development of this technology pending regulations.
The letter, signed by other businessmen and some politicians, warns of the risks to the world if the development and training of AI tools more powerful than GPT-4 is not stopped until there is regulatory legislation on the matter.
The missive considered strange and even somewhat exaggerated regarding the fatalistic capabilities of this technology, states that “AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, as demonstrated by extensive research and recognized by leading AI labs.”
Elon Musk’s concerns
There is speculation that Musk’s new AI company will be incorporated into plans for the creation of artificial intelligence. After the acquisition of Twitter the Tesla boss merged the company with another called X Corp.
Musk is concerned about Microsoft’s control and influence over OpenAI. The billionaire fears that the startup will cease to be a non-profit operation and become just another commercial enterprise.
But, Musk himself was among the early investors and board members of OpenAI, the research lab founded in 2015 that developed ChatGPT. In early 2018, he stepped down from the board as Tesla began to focus more on AI, OpenAI said on its blog.
As Musk revealed both the name and the concept of OpenAI were created by him. He now regrets that it is under Microsoft’s dominance.
The tech mogul’s other concern is that chatbots have become too politically correct. Musk promises that his company will be focused on truth and dedicated to trying to “understand the nature of the universe.”
