The latest mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, a suburb of Houston metro area, carried out by 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis who was a student at the school should show us just how ineffective government at all levels are when it comes to providing solutions to this problem.
Each year, the number of mass school shootings increases from the previous year. This year alone, there have been 16 school shootings, resulting in deaths or injuries thus far here in the US, yet no one in public office can come up with a solution that is viable. Instead, all we hear is political posturing from both sides advocating their either pro or con side of the gun issue.
It may interest all elected officials to know that this is not a gun issue at all, the fact that Dimitrios Pagourtzis was just 17 years old and could not have legally purchased a gun, proves this. What we are dealing with is the individual mindset of people who cross the line of sanity and carry out such crimes, which is another issue in itself.
What must be done immediately is provide security at all public schools to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The way to do this is having local city police and or County Sheriffs stationed at every public school acting as school security. This can easily be done by having police departments and sheriff departments implement a special school squad of officers whose primary duty is to protect everyone in public schools.

The number of officers necessary at a public school would depend on the student population of a particular school.
By now, most have seen city police acting as security in your local Walmart, Sam’s Club, and other giant retailers. This is because crime has become such a problem in many areas in these stores that they feel the need to have actual police officers stationed in their businesses rather than have private security personnel. Local police departments who are providing these officers as security gladly do it because they do not have to respond numerous times per day via calls from the retailers, as they are already there.
Of course, there are costs involved with using actual police, but that is erased for the businesses in zero thefts, and for the city or county in not having to respond to thousands of calls. It also frees up police to be able to respond quickly to much worse crimes being committed, instead of having to deal with a petty crime first.
If police and sheriffs can be stationed at big retail for security, it can be done at all public schools. I’m sure most citizens would not have a problem with the extra few dollars in taxes per year if it were being used for the safety of our children at school.
The Federal government could actually do something about mass school shootings for a change by providing local and state subsidies for stationing police at all public schools. The Federal government wastes billions of dollars per year on ridiculous projects, supposedly loses trillions from the Defense Department, elected officials spend millions by simply coming to work and doing nothing constructive. With this in mind, the cost of protecting our children in public school is a drop in the bucket.
