Activist Says Congressmen Confess to Not Reading the Budget Deal They Passed

When I want a little “comic” relief from the world, I like to watch the “Golden Girls.” Lately, I have not done so because the “comic” relief I am getting of late comes out of Washington, specifically from the Congress. Everyone makes mistakes. We are merely human after all. The important thing about making mistakes is to learn from them. Unfortunately, the members of Congress do not understand that concept.

In a move reminiscent of the passing of Obamacare, Congress passed the two year budget deal containing the cut of the Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) for veterans by one percent per year until the veterans turn age 62 without reading it.

According to the Daily Caller:

Many lawmakers including a vast cross-section of Republican House members voted for the recent two-year budget deal without reading the bill and realizing that it slashes veteran pensions – and there’s now bipartisan desperation reaching the White House to repeal that provision with new legislation.

“[The House] moved it very quickly, it came out Tuesday, they voted Thursday and they were gone Thursday night,” retired Col. Mike Barron told The Daily Caller. Barron’s organization Military Officers Association of American (MOAA) is now leading a charge on Capitol Hill to repeal pension cuts. “Many members and their staff told us they were not given a chance to read the bill.”

The House voted 332-94 on December 12 to approve the two-year budget deal, which slashes the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for veteran retirees by one percent per year until the veterans turn 62 years of age. MOAA calculated that a veteran who retired at the E-7 pay grade, equivalent to a Sergeant First Class, at age 40 would lose $83,000 in post-retirement purchasing power while an O-5 senior officer would lose $124,000. After it passed the Senate, President Obama signed the bill into law on December 26.

“A lot of members didn’t bother reading it, especially in the House. There was such a rush to get out of town, there was no heads-up. The staffs were not consulted. This was a backroom deal, and folks wanted the overall budget agreement to go through and not hold it up,” Barron said.

Barron indicated his group has “stormed the Capitol”, contacting every Congressman electronically and talking with every Senate member. It seems now that 1 in every 3 members of Congress have “expressed their desire to repeal the provision.”

Even those members in the Senate who voted for the bill on December 18 in order to get to the larger budget deal are “going to use a vehicle to repeal it.”

Being that it seems our Congress is full of individuals who cannot read or refuse to read, might I suggest this country might be just as well off with chimpanzees sitting in Congress. Let’s face facts here, the chimpanzees couldn’t do any worse, and might do a bit better. This is a major embarrassment that Congress has brought upon themselves.

Now that Congress has “been made aware” of their latest faux pas, new legislation must now be introduced to reduce the impact on our veterans and repeal that portion of the bill. Republican Rep. Jeff Miller has proposed HR 3789 and HR 3790 which address these two issues respectively, which must be taken to the House floor. Republican Sen. Kelly Ayote has likewise proposed a revision to the current legislation.

How many times have Americans heard that Obamacare cannot be repealed or changed because it is the “law of the land?” We’ve heard it so much it can make you sick especially when there is knowledge to indicate otherwise. Now, with the budget deal, a piece of legislation can “repeal” that provision of this backdoor deal gone wrong. I’m sure Congress is anxious to do so as the mid-term elections are just around the corner and the voting base must be secured.

One would think Congress would have learned from the infamous Nancy Pelosi statement, “We have to pass it so we can find out what’s in it” that turned out to be one of the most stupid remarks of a member of Congress. As it turns out, members of Congress are lacking intelligence and at some point, I would say an entire left hemisphere of their collective brains. It would appear these politicians must “check” their brain at the door of the Capitol then receive a ticket to retrieve it when it’s time to vacation. Some might argue they never had a brain to start with or suffer intensely from crazed Obama idolatry equal to the madness seen in Nazi German regarding Hitler infatuation. Others might say many lost their ticket a while back or can’t identify their brain in a pile of lost and found gray matter parts.

Whatever the reason Congress has become inept, incompetence is a rampant disease and cancer upon the legislative body of this country. This practice of “passing bills without reading them” has damaged and will continue to damage this country. The only way to correct this behavior is to remove every single politician “taking up space” in our nation’s capital by whatever means necessary. They have all become fools; but what’s worse is the reflection it casts upon the American public as a whole.

With the 2014 elections upcoming, it will be critical for Americans to find and support quality “Statesmen,” not politicians. In light of the revelation that our elected officials don’t read, the first question to ask any candidate is “Can you read?” If the answer is “yes,” the next question should be “Will you?”
