Home » Army Vet Chris Mintz Sought to Save Lives in Oregon Shooting – Was Shot Multiple Times Himself
In the wake of crimes like the one committed this week in Oregon, there is always a sadness for those who lost their lives or were injured. However, there was one man who was shot multiple times during the shooting spree that is somewhat of a hero. His name is Chris Mintz.
Mintz, 30, an Army veteran of ten years and originally from Randleman, North Carolina, had just started college at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. Mintz had just started his day by wishing his son a happy sixth birthday before starting classes.
However, once he heard shots fired, he disregarded what the Army is telling our military and immediately attempted to respond to stop the shooter.
The Army Times reports:
Mintz heard gunshots in the classroom next to his and instead of running, walked toward the gunman, according to his cousin, Ariana Earnhardt.
“He told the people in his classroom just be calm. He met the shooter at the door and said to calm down. He tried to talk to him and talk him out of it,” Earnhardt told WFMY-TV.
“The shooter was originally in the classroom next to his. He heard the gunshots so he told the people in his classroom to just be calm. He came and he met the shooter at the door. He was like you need to calm down. I guess he tried to talk to him and talk him out of it and he shot him.” After speaking with the gunman, he was shot 3 times. He told the man that it was his son, Tyrik’s 6th birthday and to please not do this. The gunman continued to shoot Mintz and proceed to the classroom.
Several family members have said things that they are only hearing about, but were not eyewitnesses to. This seems to be the case with Earnhardt as she was not at the scene. However, there are eyewitness accounts of what Mintz did do, so let’s make sure we distinguish the difference.
“He ran to the library and pulled the alarms and he was telling people to run, grabbing people, telling them, ‘You just have to go,'” witness Hannah Miles told ABC News.
“He actually ran back towards the building where the shooting was and he ran back into the building and I don’t know what happened to him,” she said.
Mintz had to undergo surgery for his wounds.
“I just hope that everyone else is OK,” he told ABC News Friday morning. “I’m just worried about everyone else.”
Several people have had high praise for Mintz. Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer tweeted:

The New York Daily News reports that a Marine, who was previously engaged to former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s daughter, Bristol Palin, wrote, “Chris Mintz ran towards gun fire to save other. Wish you a speedy recovery.”

Wanda Mintz told FOX8, “He could have very easily died. I really think that if he wasn’t such a strong, young guy, he may have died.”
Mintz was shot a total of seven times, according to Shelly Stefanich, a spokeswoman for Mercy Medical Center. No vital organs were hit. However, both of his legs were broken, and that has yet to be determined how that happened. His cousin said he will have to learn to walk again.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Chris with medical expenses related to his injuries. The goal was only $10,000, but as of the writing of this article, over $600,000 has been raised.
One thing is for sure, Chris is not the only veteran on campus. I previously reported that French jihadist thwarter Alek Skarlatos had attended the same college and it has been reported that numerous veterans attend the college.
The sad reality is that these veterans are highly trained with weapons and that there are most definitely some that suffer from post-traumatic stress due to their time in war. So, the question is, why is the college a gun free zone? Why are people not allowed to arm themselves, including our veterans, to stop murderers like Chris Harper Mercer, who could only be stopped with a gun?
It is my suggestion that any and all Americans ignore pretended legislation that seeks to disarm the people in unconstitutional “gun free zones” in violation of the protections of the Second Amendment, which recognize the right to keep and bear arms is a right given by God that government is not allowed to infringe upon. Let’s start making these murderous, godless shooters wish they had never given murder a single thought. I’m sure the people you save will stand up for your bravery when the time comes and nullify any attempt by the state or feds to bring injustice upon you.
