According to reports, at least twenty-six people, including at least 14 children, have been killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. It seems a gunman entered the school around 9:40am this morning armed with a pair of guns. Police are looking for a red or maroon van with the back windows blown out that may have been driven by a second gunman.
SWAT teams arrived after reports of the shooting. CBS reports:
CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.
The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.
Two students and a teacher were also injured in the shooting and they were taken to Dansbury Hospital, spokeswoman Diane Burke told CBS News York.
The school and local hospitals where patients were transported were placed on lockdown for a short time, but that was lifted as bus routes began to run after the lockdown was lifted from the school.
CBS was reporting that 27 people were killed, including 14 children, while Fox was reporting that 26 people were killed, including 18 children.
The shooting is one of the largest school shootings in the United States, compared to the 1999 Columbine High School shooting which claimed the lives of 13 and the massacre at Virginia Tech in 2007 were 32 were killed.
While our hearts go out to the families at this time, we can expect the liberal talking heads will be all over this today and over the weekend calling for more gun control laws, the likes of which would not have stopped this incident or anyone like it.
UPDATE: Already pundits are saying this should give political capital for more gun control laws and White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked about the administration’s actions towards this. See, told ya so!
