When gifted neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson spoke out at the National Prayer breakfast and communicated sound principles, people applauded him. Even I thought his speech was great and I wrote about it. Many were already making bumper stickers and t-shirts with “Ben Carson for President” on them. Well stop the presses. Carson, in a candid moment with Glenn Beck, completely fumbled the Second Amendment, and with that fumble goes any chance of real conservatives or libertarians backing him for office, or at least it should. Carson claimed that people who live in large cities shouldn’t be allowed to own semi-automatic weapons.
Ironically, Carson was an ROTC instructor for Freedom Outpost’s Kevin Fobbs and Fobbs communicated his respect for Carson and his appreciation for the lessons he learned from him in a recent article.
However, though Carson passed on political correctness when it came to the prayer breakfast with Barack Obama looking on not ten feet from where he spoke, on this issue he does not stand with the Constitution and one of the most basic duties of man and that is to be able to defend one’s self, family, community from attackers and tyrannical government.
“There’s a reason for the Second Amendment; people do have the right to have weapons,” he said.
However, Carson thinks that right is limited by where someone lives. When asked whether or not people should be allowed to own semi-automatic weapons, he answered, “It depends on where you live.”
“I think if you live in the midst of a lot of people, and I’m afraid that that semi-automatic weapon is going to fall into the hands of a crazy person, I would rather you not have it,” Carson added.
However, if you live “out in the country somewhere by yourself” and want to own a semi-automatic weapon, he continued, “I’ve no problem with that.”
Well that’s all fine and dandy, but the issue is not whether someone has a problem with it or not. The issue is everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that’s as far as it goes.
I’m quite curious, that just three weeks after giving that speech and presenting some great points that he is now speaking about gun control. Does that raise anyone else’s suspicions?
Here’s the thing, conservatives, or I should say “neo-conservatives” of our day are so eager to cling on to anyone that they will ignore this and many will continue their “Carson for President” chant. It’s like Christians who get all excited about a celebrity who claims to have “gotten saved.” Instead of keeping our eye on the true King, the Lord Jesus Christ, we start looking at men and we idolize them. We look to them as though they are the answer to our problems. They are not.
This is not to say that we should not look to install men of integrity and character to office. We should. The Scriptures are clear: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.”
One should be able to trust that those who are even remotely interested in any office in our land should be those who understand what the law of the land is and uphold it. Otherwise, they will just become an addition to the problem and a help to tyranny.
Am I saying that someone has to be perfect? Far from it. However, We all should be able to elect representatives to office that actually know what the Constitution teaches and then abide by it. That really isn’t asking a lot.
I realize we all carry a lot of baggage and we are all learning and growing. With that in mind, I hope someone will speak with Dr. Carson and correct his “problem” with the Second Amendment.
