California: Cop Adopts Baby Girl Of Homeless Woman Battling Drug Addiction

With so much of the corruption and lawlessness that we report on among the police force, it’s always great to provide a story where police officer does something truly heroic.  Such is the case with Santa Rosa Police Department Officer Jesse Whitten and his wife adopted a little baby girl from her homeless mother who was battling drug addiction.

The announcement was made on the Santa Rosa Police Department’s Facebook page on Friday, showing a picture of Officer Whitten holding the baby and smiling.

Not long ago, while Ofc. Whitten was working he met a pregnant woman needing help. She didn’t ask for assistance the way a typical call for service goes, she was looking for a home and a family for her unborn baby. Ofc. Whitten, the proud father of three girls already, opened his heart and his home to this baby. And now it’s official! After a moving adoption hearing, she is a part of Ofc. Whitten’s family. Congratulations, Whitten family, and welcome, baby, to the SRPD family!

The San Francisco CBS affiliate reported on how the happy occasion took place.

The woman was living on the streets, pregnant and battling a drug addiction. While on patrol, Whitten would show compassion to her and on one such meeting last August, his wife — Ashley — was along side. The two women struck up a conversation about motherhood and its challenges.

“I mentioned — ‘Oh, you are pregnant’ — and she said — ‘Oh yea’ — and placed my hand on her womb,” Ashley said.

At a Valentine’s Day party, the Whittens got a call that would change their lives forever. The birth mother specifically asked for Ashley and Jesse to adopt her child.

“It’s weird to live in the tension of joy and heartbreak like this story is,” said Ashley Whitten. “It’s wonderful at the same time.”

Little Harlow Masie Whitten is now six months old and has her adoptive dad and mom wrapped around her little finger. And she has blended in nicely with her three new siblings.

“She smiles so beautifully,” said Jesse.

“Her smile is the best thing,” Ashley added.

Though baby Harlow had some trouble in the first few weeks of her life due to being exposed to drugs in the womb, she is doing amazing now.

This week, the adoption into the Whitten family became official, and when the couple saw the birth mother, it was an emotional meeting for all involved.

“We were talking and … I was saying as her — ‘You made this choice for her and that we are so grateful,’” Ashley said. “And she said — ‘You’re her mother now.’”

There are still good people in the world willing to do the right thing and even those who may have made bad choices in their lives that are willing to do the right thing when it comes to life.  Perhaps, Senator Dianne Feinstein and others could take a lesson from this encounter on how pregnant women could deal with their babies rather than murdering them in the womb, and perhaps, American families can once again start looking to adoption as an alternative to the murder of the unborn.

May God bless the Whittens, and I hope the birth mother is able to have her life turned around.
