CNN is no stranger to controversy and when it comes to stoking racial divide in the mainstream media, they are at the top of the list. Late last year, Don Lemon made national headlines as he urged Americans not to “demonize” each other and then in the same breath called white men “the biggest terror threat in this country.” Now, CNN is at it again, this time calling out SiriusXM radio host and Fox News contributor David Webb for his “white privilege.” The only problem is, Webb is a black man.
On Tuesday, CNN’s legal analyst Areva Martin failed miserably at race baiting after she began accusing Webb of “white privilege” on his radio show.
The two were discussing a recent controversy brought up by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) over CBS failing to hire any black journalists to cover the 2020 election. Webb then asked Martin what she thought about Ocasio-Cortez’s reaction.
Martin said she agreed with Ocasio-Cortez and said that it was unacceptable for media outlets to claim that there aren’t enough journalists of color available.

Webb told Martin that he had “31 years” of experience in the media, adding “I’ve seen the coverage, and I’ve also seen it change, generationally … I have not seen the lack of [diversity], I’ve seen, actually growth in it,” he said.
Webb then flipped the tables on Martin and asked her if she thought Black Entertainment Television (BET) should be forced to hire a white or Hispanic reporter. Martin responded by saying it would be up to BET.
Webb then brought up the fact that people should be hired based on their qualifications and not the color of their skin and noted that “I never considered my color the issue. I considered my qualifications the issue.”
Thinking Webb was a white man, Martin proceeded to turn the issue into that of “white privilege.”
“Well, David, that’s a whole ‘other long conversation about white privilege, the things that you have the privilege of doing that people of color don’t have the privilege of…”
Webb interrupts and asks, “How do I have the privilege of white privilege?”
That’s when the epic fail at race baiting happened.
“David, by virtue of being a white male, you have white privilege,” Martin said.
Webb, clearly taken aback at the accusations of his success being attributed to white privilege, then fired back.
“Areva, I hate to break it to you, but you should have been better prepped. I’m black … See, you went to white privilege. This is the falsehood in this. You went immediately with an assumption … You’re talking to a black man who started out in rock radio in Boston, who crossed the paths into hip-hop, rebuilding one of the greatest black stations in America, and went on to work for Fox News, where I’m told apparently blacks aren’t supposed to work, but yet you come with this assumption and you go to white privilege. That’s actually insulting!”
Martin proceeded to apologize before claiming that “My people gave me wrong information.”
There are undoubtedly terrible people out there in this world who choose not to hire or discriminate against people because of the color of their skin. These people are racist and deserve to be called out.
However, accusing every single person you come in contact with of having “privilege” because of their skin color is not the way of fighting it as this just adds more prejudice to the situation.
Being born into an arbitrary race is not the issue, racism is. And, as the above interview highlights, if we can’t get past focusing on skin color, racism will continue to be an issue.
