Yesterday might have just well been Friday the thirteenth for our emperor boy Obama. The House, in a surprising move, blocked the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) by voting down the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), which would provide financial assistance to those who lost jobs or wages because of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. TAA was shot down in a stunning 302 to 126 vote while TPA passed marginally in a 219 to 211 vote. TPA is not dead and will get a second round of voting next week; however, the measure was halted because the House split the Senate bill into three sections, with disapproval of TAA being the crux.
The interesting part in this whole mess is only 28 Democrats joined 191 Republicans to approve fast track authority on a trade deal benefitting corporations. With Obama being Democrat, one would expect his party to back him up all the way, with Republicans being the fly in the ointment. The reverse happened. When it comes to financial assistance for displaced workers, Democrats normally support this measure with Republicans being against it. Instead of Americans having Republicans to thank for the stall on TPA, it is the Democrats receiving the accolades, however temporary they may be, as 144 Democrats joined 191 Republicans to derail the TAA.
This entire situation runs similar to the scripted nature of the WWE SmackDown show, if you watch wrestling. While I do not partake myself, my Dad is an avid fan. So on Monday, Thursday, and Friday nights, one can hear all the hullaballoo occurring with this and that wrestler. It is comparable to listening to a daytime soap opera.
Let me explain. In the line-up, certain wrestlers are “good guys” and others are “bad guys.” The standard good versus bad contest occurs between rivalries. This will go on for a pre-determined timeframe; then, one night, it flips — the good guy becomes bad and the bad guy good. It generates the love/hate relationship that keeps fans tuned in each week to follow the “script.” Fans watch to see how “their man” stacks up, what he does, why he does it and whom he targets for rivalry.
Take this scenario and apply it to both chambers of Congress, break it down initially to Republicans versus Democrats. Within each party, subdivide it even further with conservatives, liberals, RINOs, communists, socialists, progressives and independents. Now, look at who has come out in favor of TPA and who opposes it. One can almost detect a “script” where the parties flipped poles. It smells of “playing” the public.
Democrats lost control of the Senate last November making both chambers majority Republican. The Hildebeast is not doing well at all in gaining support for her 2016 bid for the White House. Democrats are in trouble and need to regain momentum.
Republicans, on the other hand, are riding the wave of success after Americans voted in the mid-terms to gain Republicans a majority in the Senate. An overwhelming number of Republicans have thrown their hat into the ring for a shot at the presidency, including some “golden boys” of the Tea Party movement. They believe they are doing well and have the support of the people.
Look at the comments some Democrats made on this recent issue.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), on the floor before the vote, stated, “I will be voting to slow down fast track. Today we have an opportunity to slow down. Whatever the deal is with other countries, we want a better deal for American workers.”
Rep. Sandra Levin (D-MI), ranking Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, said, “The real issue here is TPP, and this is an effort to get TPP on the right track.”
Rep. Daniel Kildee (D-MI), stated, “I understand the President’s point of view. I just fundamentally disagree with it. If I’m opposed to [fast track] authority, it’s logical I would use every tool that I can to try and stop it.”
Rep. Keith Ellison, Democrat from Minnesota, speaking of Obama’s visit to the House, said, “He made it like, ‘You are questioning me and my integrity’. He implied we have to say, ‘We trust you, so what you’re doing is fine’. And I don’t agree with that.”
Bristling at the “play it straight” recommendation by Obama on TAA, Rep. Peter A. DeFazio (D-OR) stated, “Basically, the president tried to both guilt people and then impugn their integrity.”
This is very different from what happened with Obamacare.
What have some Republicans said and done?
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), potential 2016 presidential candidate, has come out in support of TPP and fast track authority, going so far as to declare Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) as being “not accurate” with TPA giving Obama more authority. Cruz did say he had been to the secret room and read what there was of the TPP.
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, stated, “The president has some work yet to do with his party to complete this process. This isn’t over yet.”
Another 2016 Republican presidential run hopeful, Scott Walker, former Wisconsin Governor, came out in support of TPP and fast track authority without having the ability to read it. He stated, “If we don’t go down this path, we’re going to be at a competitive disadvantage, and so I think it just makes sense.”
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC), both vying for a Republican 2016 presidential nomination, voted in the Senate for TPA and TPP. It is unclear whether either of these elected officials has read the secret TPP in the secret room.
Co-author of the legislation, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), stated, “In the midst of any high stakes negotiations, some level of confidentiality is essential to getting a good deal, especially in this case.”
What is on everyone’s mind is what is in the agreement that requires “confidentiality” or secrecy? The majority of Congress does not even know. Parts of these agreements, obtained by Wikileaks, indicate there is no “free” trade and the US gets the short end of the stick.
What these idiots seem to forget is fast track authority not only applies to the TPP; but, it applies to the Trade In Services Agreement and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership as well. These agreements contain portions that undermine our sovereignty, unilaterally alter our immigration laws, displace American workers, increase the trade deficit and benefit the big corporations. It is possible they did not forget and it is their plan to deliver the final blow to the United States. Whichever it is, those who support this are undermining the rule of law and the supreme law of the land, the Constitution of the united States of America — they are traitors.
If your head is not spinning yet, it is clear there is a shift occurring. Let the WDC (Washington, District of Corruption) Congressional “Smack-down” begin. Unfortunately, no remote in the world exists to change that channel. What is even worse is the entire world is watching this “show,” which is a total embarrassment to this nation. Of course, it has been embarrassing for quite some time now. All that’s missing is for members of Congress to don their “costumes” and get in the ring. Dang, Nancy Pelosi in a “Kelly Kelly” outfit popped up in my mind with McConnell and Boehner flaunting a “Big Show” ensemble.
