Cruz & Feinstein Have It Out As Assault Weapons Ban Bill Passes Committee

In a vote, 10-8, along party lines, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved Senator Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) ban on the sale and manufacture of more than 150 types of semi-automatic weapons on Thursday. However, the vote took place after the Cruz missile struck. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) lectured Feinstein on the United States Constitution.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) put forth four amendments which were beat back by the Democrats. Cornyn asked for exceptions for victims of domestic violence, military veterans and those living on Southwest Border States that he said were affected by Mexican gang violence.

Feinstein said that the amendments were “an effort to nip it and tuck it and create exceptions.”

Cornyn said that the bill will leave law abiding citizens with “peashooters” against criminals.

Senator Ted Cruz also lectured Feinstein as to the meaning of the Constitution and why the language was written in the way it was by the framers.

“I’m not a sixth-grader,” she told Cruz. “I’m not a lawyer, but after 20 years, I’ve been up close and personal to the Constitution. I have great respect for it. … It’s fine you want to lecture me on the Constitution. I appreciate it. Just know I’ve been here for a long time. I’ve passed on a number of bills. I’ve studied the Constitution myself. I am reasonably well-educated, and I thank you for the lecture.”

Cruz then asked if she thought she had power to interpret the First Amendment to decide what books people could read.

While she brought up the fact that child pornography was illegal, that didn’t answer the question, seeing as the First Amendment limits Congress in that aspect. However, States rightly determine that child pornography is illegal. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) brought up issues in Cruz’s home state over content in textbooks. However, again, that is a State’s rights issue, not a Federal issue.

These people may have been in Washington a long time and they may have “studied” the Constitution, but they don’t have a clue as to why it was written and how it actually was written to limit them, not expand their power.

The Associated Press reports,

The sponsor of an assault weapons ban is conceding that she’ll need lots of help from President Barack Obama and others for the proposal to have a chance of surviving in the Senate.

The Democratic-led Senate Judiciary Committee seemed certain to approve the measure Thursday, probably on a party-line vote. But once it reaches the full Senate _ probably in April _ the measure appears destined for defeat, thanks to opposition by Republicans and some moderate Democrats, as well.

“I’d like to see everybody doing more,” bill sponsor Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said Wednesday when asked if she’d like more assistance from Obama. “Yes, absolutely, we need help. We have the 800-pound gorilla out there” _ a reference to the potent National Rifle Association.

The problem is that the weapons she says are so bad are not a major issue at all. The issue is this old woman has an agenda and it’s crystal clear; she wants a disarmed population.

Feinstein in commenting on the tough road ahead for her legislation said, “The road is uphill. I fully understand that.”

Count on it! The American people will oppose you and all your ilk who seek to restrict firearms and ammunition any more than you already have. The people in Washington who continue to push the American people more and more with your unlawful laws and attacks upon the Constitution are facing a sleeping giant. If they aren’t careful, they are going to wake it and when they do it will not be a pretty sight.
