Home » David Gregory Makes Conservative Point About Gun Control Laws, Then Gets Investigated
Washington, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier confirms that her department is investigating allegations that NBC’s Meet The Press host David Gregory violated D.C.’s gun laws, which ban high capacity magazines, as he openly held and showed one to his audience during an interview with the National Rifle Association’s Vice President Wayne LaPierre on Sunday.
During the interview, Gregory held up a high capacity magazine, that resembles a metal magazine for an AR-15 that holds 30 rounds.
Gregory then says he wants to “widen the argument” and holds up the magazine to LaPierre and says, “So here is a magazine for ammunition that carries 30 bullets. Now isn’t it possible, that if we got rid of these, if we replace them with say, if we said you could only have a magazine that carries five bullets or ten bullets. Isn’t it just possible that we could reduce the carnage?”
Now friends this is what a friend of mine calls “being tossed a tater with a bow on it.” Why do I say that? Because this is the very reason that Gregory is now being investigated by the D.C. police.
According to D.C.’s law which bans high capacity magazines (Official Code 7-2506.01):
(b) No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. For the purposes of this subsection, the term large capacity ammunition feeding device means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The term large capacity ammunition feeding device shall not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.
Gregory is asking for the very thing that is already on the books as law and notice that he is engaging in criminal activity, according to D.C. code, by holding up a magazine that holds three times what D.C. says. I thought these laws were to get these off the streets Mr. Gregory! Isn’t that what liberals and gun control freaks tell us? Yet, in what is probably the most strict gun control area in our country, a TV host can brandish an object that is against the law on national television. Does anyone else see that Gregory has just made the point that many like myself have been making for years and that is laws like the one he suggests only puts these items in the hands of the bad guys (in other words criminals, and yes, everyone can see he openly violated the law). Apparently the law didn’t stop Mr. Gregory from obtaining and waving around an illegal item in the area he broadcasts from.
With that said, I think the D.C. laws are an attack on Mr. Gregory’s Second Amendment rights. Yes, liberals have those too. However, he did violate the law and since he is one advocating for such laws, while at the same time violating them, then I think he deserves to get the fullest punishment for that violation based strictly on his own hypocrisy.
So just what would that penalty be? According to Koehler Law, a D.C. based law firm, under the section titled Unlawful Possession of Ammunition (US):
A person guilty of this charge can be sentenced to a maximum fine of $1000 and/or up to a year imprisonment. D.C. Criminal Code 7-2506.01.
Here’s hoping that maybe a member of the liberal media might get what’s coming to him, but I for one am not going to hold my breath to see if it actually takes place.
UPDATE: Reporter Whitney Eleanor Wild Tweeted that NBC had asked DCMPD if they could use the high capacity magazine and were told no. Legal Insurrection Blog confirms the story of the DCMPD’s denial of permission to Gregroy and NBC.
