We, who are old enough to have lived through the years of Jim Crow; the “white” and “colored” water coolers, the seats in the back, and front, of the bus, know full well the impact the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King had upon our consciences and our nation. It was a long time coming, and it was based on disregarding the color of one’s skin.
Who among us today cannot recall the image of Dr. King on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial as his words rang out across the nation and the world?
We all remember the most famous of his “dreams.” But in fact, there were several more:
“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
“I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
“I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted. . . and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.
“And this will be the day — this will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning:
My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim’s pride,
From every mountainside, let freedom ring!
“And when this happens, and when we allow freedom (to) ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:
Free at last! Free at last!
Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”
What has happened to us? We had achieved a number of Dr. King’s dreams. Gone are the segregated water fountains and schools. We Southerners, largely, passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and abided by it. We condemned the red-necked, pot-bellied, white-trash racists who desecrated the Confederate flag by choosing it as their symbol of bigotry. We even participated in the election of an African-American president…. Twice. We were making progress until the race pimps and politicians saw further exploitation of persons of color as a means to gain celebrity and perpetuate political power.
Just as the slave traders and cotton plantation owners exploited their ancestors, those preaching “income equality” and “amnesty for all” are similarly exploiting today’s less informed segments of our society. The search for those with Dr. King’s “content of character” has been replaced by seeking those willing sell their voting right in return for food stamps, Obamaphones, and the security of anchor babies.
Today’s persons of color, now a blend of black, brown, and yellow, are being herded and exploited just as certain as they were in the era of Alex Haley’s Kunta Kinte.
Amnesty? Forgiveness? Security? Opportunity? Who’s kidding whom? You don’t have to go further than the recently released PEW poll results to learn that the vast majority of those being invited to sit down to Dr. King’s “table of brotherhood,” are being invited to sit for one purpose, and one purpose only. . . VOTES!
