Women across the USA are angry about the recent Hobby Lobby Supreme Court ruling, which basically means the Affordable Care Act cannot require companies to cover contraceptives, abortion drugs, or abortions. This should be a no-brainer for those of us who understand health insurance.
A contraceptive, abortion drugs, and abortions, for the most part, fall under the category of being electives, meaning the individuals who partake in them have chosen to, rather than having to due to a medical condition. This, in itself, is clearly something that no health insurance policy, government or private should have to cover.
We would not expect our health care insurance to cover plastic surgery, hair implants, Botox injections for wrinkle removal, or piercing simply because these procedures are recreational and entirely based on an individual’s choice and not something, that is required due to a medical condition.
Insurance companies, health or otherwise, issue policies based on possibilities, primarily betting on the individual being covered not to need the use of the insurance. To believe otherwise, would be similar to insurance companies issuing life insurance policies immediately allowing anyone covered to commit suicide.
No health insurance company should have to pay for someone’s birth control medication since the individual has the choice of either abstinence or using other means to prevent pregnancy.
In most instances, except in cases of rape, abortions are electable procedures because the women involved chose to risk getting pregnant by engaging in sex. In this case, women have the option of carrying their babies to term and either keeping them or putting them up for adoption, or they can choose to purchase the morning after pill or going to an abortion clinic to kill their baby.
At the same time, sexually enhancement drugs such as Viagra should also be listed as an electable since a man elects to increase his sexual performance, not because he has to.
As far as needing the use of sexually related drugs for legitimate medical conditions, in this case they will still be available, just under their generic name such as the drug commonly known as Nortrel; used as a contraceptive, would be available under its generic name Norethindrone used as a drug to treat endometriosis, for instance.
This is all based on what we should expect from health insurance policies, not what is want from them. Otherwise, we are expecting someone else to pay for irresponsible sexual behavior.
