Once the federal government established its authority over the states in “The War to Enslave the States,” the message that the creature had become dominant over its creator was established. There was no longer an issue of States’ rights; a State (yes, intentional capitalization) had no rights unless the federal government told the State it did. Whether anyone believes this or not, is irrelevant as it is the truth that is relevant. So, what is the truth?
According to the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution of the united (yes, intentional) States, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
Since the Constitution does not grant the federal government the power to determine educational requirements or standards for our children, that power is reserved to the States or the people. However, the federal government usurped that power with the establishment of the Department of Education. Now, with their mandates of “no child left behind” and the dreaded Common Core, the federal government has taken control of the power of education away from the States and the people. In fact, any State that does not follow the “rules” set forth by the federal government through the Department of Education will be threatened with loss of their federal funding.
The State of Indiana has been the first state to drop the Common Core standards and according to The Blaze, “The US Department of Education said in a letter to Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz that the state must prove it own standards are just as challenging, or else risk losing its waiver from the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law and have its federal funding in jeopardy.”
Indiana has become the first state to repeal the Common Core English and Math standard for grades K-12 out of the 44 states that have adopted the controversial standards.
According to Ritz, the Indiana Department of Education has begun the most “extensive review and overhaul of academic standards in Indiana history.” She expressed confidence in her State’s new standards along with the ability to demonstrate full compliance with the waiver. Indiana has until July 1, according to the bill passed by the Indiana legislature, to have the new standards in place for the 2014-2015 school year.
Brittany Corona, a domestic policy researcher for the Heritage Foundation, commented on the letter from the US Department of Education as demonstrating “just how weak the phrases ‘state-led’ and ‘voluntary’ became when used to describe Common Core,” adding, “Indiana’s pre-Common Core state standards were ranked among the highest in the nation.”
This creates a dilemma for officials in the State of Indiana. Brad Oliver, Indiana State Board of Education member stated, “Based on what I know right now, I am very concerned that our waiver could be in jeopardy. The repercussions of losing our waiver are more than just financial. It would immediately have an impact on local districts.”
And, there you have it, folks. The federal government basically coerces the States into compliance with the threat of pulling federal money away from the States – money, I remind you, that came from your tax dollars. Imagine for one minute, if the money taken from your pocket to fund the US Department of Education along with the money doled out to the States by the federal government actually stayed in your State. Once that idea has settled, now imagine that the tax dollars you send to the States and the federal government ceased providing for the education of illegal immigrants. If you can get over that flaming statement, imagine if the State governments actually put trust in their own officials and their own citizenry to establish educational standards that secure thorough education, not indoctrination, of our youth to become productive members of society. It is and still remains the intent of the law of the land.
While many Americans would herald these ideas, there are others who would complain saying that corruption is so rampant in their State or their State is so poor that these programs are needed at the federal level; or, children who were brought here illegally by their parents shouldn’t suffer; or, our State doesn’t have anyone capable of establishing educational standards to match the rest of the country.
These are excuses. If corruption is rampant in your State, get in there and start to clean it up which might increase the wealth of your State. Regardless of age, anyone here illegally has violated the immigration law and should be sent back to their country of origin. If there is any question to the capability of officials charged with educational standards, those officials can cooperate with other States who have educational standards that are ranked high in the nation, such as Indiana, or those officials can be replaced either through the ballot box or asking for removal.
Those who would reject the idea of the States and the people actually being responsible for the education of America’s youth are content to be “enslaved” to the federal government who has prostituted the States through payment for its servitude or to continue to partake of the government dole through handouts and entitlements. Any State who continually rejects its own authority outlined in the Constitution in favor of the rule of the federal government, where the federal government has usurped power, is explicitly surrendering, not only its rights, but also the rights of its people, to the iron-fisted rule, not governance, of a despotic, tyrannical, out of control federal government.
Frankly, I would like to hear the repercussions, other than financial, and impacts that would occur at the local districts in Indiana to which Mr. Oliver has eluded. I’m sure the people of Indiana would like to hear the same. It might be possible for those to be avoided if officials were more forthcoming with their concerns in order for each local district to be able to prepare and address those concerns. Of course, that would entail officials entrusting the people to exercise some sort of responsibility; and, as many of us have been witness, most officials in government at every level believe the people must have government to tie their shoes as they believe people are truly incapable of doing so.
