Feinstein Wants to Define Who Is A Journalist Under Shield Law

In the midst of attempting to pass the Journalist “Shield Law” to protect journalists and their sources, a debate ensued over who is a journalist and should be received protection under “Shield Law.”

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) only wanted to only extend the protection to “real reporters” and not, a 17-year-old with his own website.

“I can’t support it if everyone who has a blog has a special privilege … or if Edward Snowden were to sit down and write this stuff, he would have a privilege,” Feinstein said. “I’m not going to go there.”

Clearly Senator Feinstein has just as much of a problem with the First Amendment, in which “Congress shall make no law….freedom of the press,” as she does with the Second Amendment. That’s why she isn’t “going there.”

Well, several people were up in arms about Feinstein’s comments. One of those was internet journalism pioneer Matt Drudge. He took to Twitter to defend bloggers and slam Senator Feinstein.

Comments from Sen. Feinstein yesterday on who’s a reporter were disgusting. 17-year old ‘blogger’ is as important as Wolf Blitzer. Fascist!

Remember, there was a time when Drudge was the enemy of the media, especially around the Bill Clinton era where he was known for breaking such stories as the Monica Lewinsky scandal. He even referenced how a federal judge attempted to define his work as non-journalism.

Federal judge once ruled Drudge ‘is not a reporter, a journalist, or a newsgatherer.’ Millions of readers a day come for cooking recipes??!

When one looks to Webster’s 1828, they will discover a journalist is simply “The writer of a journal or diary.” In other words, in the modern era, a blog is nothing more than a journal.

Is the federal government going to take measures to force bloggers, who have been key to exposing corruption in government over the past decade, to go to journalism school so that they can get their reports approved by the White House before publishing them? Seems to me that is exactly where this is all going. It is an attempt to quash Free Speech and Freedom of the Press, something that the Constitution does not give to the Federal Government.

They are not interested in dealing with the criminal activity of the NSA or the Executive Branch. They are interested in squeezing off the life of freedom of the American people to know the truth about what they government is doing and exposing the corruption that exists inside it.

Once again, Dianne Feinstein rears her head and shows us the ugly face of tyranny.
