I’ve written extensively, as have many others, about the southern border and the illegal alien invasion. It’s one of my “make or break” issues – one issue over which a candidate for any office will immediately lose both my support and my vote.
The lawlessness at the border is indeed unprecedented, and that’s not hyperbole. It is in fact unprecedented. We’ve seen nothing at all like this since our founding.
However, George Will believes it not to be, and this wouldn’t be the first time he has taken the establishment position on immigration. I wrote about it last year. You may review it here.
He told Fox’s Chris Wallace that we should just let them in. “We are to say to these children, ‘Welcome to America, you’re going to go to school and get a job and become Americans.’ We have 3141 counties in this country. That would be 20 per county. The idea that we can’t assimilate these eight-year-old criminals with their teddy bears is preposterous.”
Well Mr. Will – whether we “have more than enough space to accommodate the children” or not, is immaterial. I’m sure, Mr. Will, you have more than enough furniture in your home for me to take a chair or two. There are laws governing immigration – or at least there used to be – just as there are laws prohibiting me from taking your furniture.
Your argument sounds a lot like “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.” That sounds a bit Karl Marx-ish or Louis Blanc-ish, if you will.
I agree that we can probably accommodate these 60,000 or so children, but this is just the first of what appears to be a constant and growing wave. So it would not be 20 per county. It will be 50, 100, 500, 1000, etc. Where will it end? When George, do we say “okay, we’re full now”? What completely arbitrary number of illegals will constitute our capacity? And who will decide? Obama? The next president? Congress? Or you Mr. Will?
Will goes on to quote Lazarus with the whole bring me your tired, poor, wretched refuse, blah-blah-blah.
As Mark Levin correctly points out, Emma Lazarus was speaking of legal immigration – orderly and managed. We didn’t just let anyone and everyone in. We had quotas and actually quarantined the sick and diseased.
Not even the most progressive in our history would have allowed the anarchy that now plagues our southern border. Not FDR – not even Woodrow Wilson.
Frankly, I think George Will may be losing his faculties. Something has happened to this once stalwart conservative. Has he grown weary of the fight? Has the Washington establishment cocktail circuit become more important to him than the survival of the nation?
This I do not know. I do know that he appears to have chosen sides, and evidently it is the establishment whom he now favors.
As for the wretched refuse he wishes to ship off to every county in the union – you can bet there will be more than a few areas that will be exempt from said refuse – certainly his county, as well as every suburb that surrounds Washington DC. “Bring them all in, but don’t put them in my backyard.”
It reminds me of the late (not great) Ted Kennedy, who was all for “alternative energy” such as wind farms, until one was proposed off the coast of Hyannis Massachusetts, within sight of the “Kennedy compound.” Teddy put the kibosh on that right quick.
Seriously, I used to admire George Will. We have come to expect the doubletalk from weaselly politicians, but not from those like him.
Like Ann Coulter, he is yet another “conservative” commentator we can no longer count on to stand up for what is right in lieu of what is expedient.
And that’s a crying shame.
