- Diana Nyad has officially become the first person to swim the 110 miles between Florida and Cuba without a shark cage.
- The CrossFit fitness community showed the power of unity and compassion by stepping up to help the families of the 19 firefighters who perished earlier this summer while battling a wildfire in Yarnell, Ariz. Athletes and enthusiasts associated with the popular exercise movement gathered Saturday in Prescott for a special benefit event for the families, the Hotshots Memorial Workout. Glenn Beck and Mercury One donated $50,000 shortly after the tragedy. This new CrossFit campaign, as of Sunday night, has raised more than $150,000.
- Officers at a San Francisco police station Friday thanked a homeless man who came to the aid of a colleague who was attacked when she tried to make an arrest. After four days of looking for Ryan Raso, San Francisco police finally found him. The 35-year-old was a wanted man; not as a suspect, but as a hero. It happened last Monday near a small crowd of people who stood by watching. Mr. Raso wrestled the attacker to the ground and later said his father, who was a former NYC detective, would have been proud of him. The officers from the Ingleside Station are now “looking out” for the man, helping him to find shelter.
- When their teacher asks the students in his class, ‘What did you do on your summer vacation,’ ten-year-old Austin Beach will have them all gaping with wide eyes. On July 18, his family was vacationing in Destin, Florida. It was Austin’s birthday and he couldn’t wait to dive into the pool. When he did, he discovered a toddler limp at the bottom of the pool. The hotel’s security video revealed a four-year-old girl had wandered away from her mom and fallen in. She struggled for more than a minute, makes it to the surface and gasps for air, then sinks and becomes still. The Mississippi boy opened his eyes underwater. “I saw her laying right there on the bottom of the pool, by the drain… (and) I went to go save her.” The Inn at Crystal Beach gave the family a complimentary three-night stay and on Friday, the Okaloosa Sheriff’s office honored him for heroism. - “Billy Ray Harris-Today his spirit has been rejuvenated,” said Sarah Darling, who accidentally dropped her engagement ring in Billy Ray Harris’ donation cup in February. Harris returned the ring, and the story inspired donors around the world. Since the fateful day that Darling’s ring landed in his cup, Harris’ life has taken a 180 degree turn. After he appeared on TV, his family members were able to find him and now keep in touch. He was able to buy a car with the donations. Darling says he is “someone who really deserves that.”

- Adam and Ashley Kern exchanged vows in a Pennsylvania hospital with only a week’s notice, so the groom’s dying mother could take part in the wedding. Adam’s mother, Anna Mae, experienced a sudden downturn in her health due to advanced breast cancer. The two were not planning to get married anytime soon, but decided to move up the timetable. The ceremony was performed in the hospital chapel and nurses blew bubbles as the couple emerged married.
- 31-year-old Jonathan Stoklosa, who has Down syndrome, is a young man with incredible power – both to lift the spirits of shoppers at his day job, and to bench press 400 pounds, amazing all at a local gym at night. Jon is an incredible powerlifter. Not an incredible Special Olympics powerlifter – just an incredible powerlifter, period. He competes in regular matches, often placing in the top three. “You walk away going, ‘Wow.” Or ‘Did I really just see what I just saw?’” said Brandon McGovern, Jonathan’s trainer.
- For the second consecutive year, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing plans to give away at least $3 million of his bonus to roughly 10,000 of his company’s workers, Bloomberg News reports. Employees across 20 countries will take part in Yuanqing’s wealth with 85 percent of payout recipients working in China. The average payout per worker of $325 is nearly equivalent to a month’s pay for an employee in China.
- Orphans around the world will be getting new shoes from Houston. Volunteers at South Main Baptist Church collected 10,000 shoes for Buckner International’s “Shoes for Orphan Souls” program. They sorted and boxed the shoes, which will be shipped to a warehouse in Dallas and then distributed to children in the U.S. and 70 other countries. The church says they have collected more than 100,000 shoes in the past 13 years.

So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
