Over a year ago, the attention-hungry Stephen Hawking talked up his new book Starmus, with a scare tactic that sent Christian televangelists into a tizzy with End-Times theories about the CERN Light Hadron Collider, located near Geneva.
A new breed of doomsday false prophets are hawking the theory that not merely Earth, but the entire universe will end on September 23, 2015. As props for their theory, they cite the bronze statue of the Hindu deity Shiva at the entrance to the CERN facility, and a whirling-dervish Hindu dance by a handful of CERN scientists.
The PR-hungry preachers suggest that demons will come out from the depths of Hell (called from thence by the mad scientists) and will show themselves to be the most powerful beings in the universe, their ‘God particle’ destroying God’s entire cosmos. You can’t make this stuff up.
Ironically, they claim to follow Christ and simultaneously suggest that a silly Hindu Barbie doll twisted into a pretzel is more powerful than God!
After five generations of following Darwin, Marx, and Lincoln, the average evangelical Christian in America is beyond help; but I will make the attempt.
No, the universe is not going to collapse into nothingness on September 23, 2015 and here’s the simplest reason why; Hawking’s quote in the preface of his 2014 book:
“The Higgs potential has the worrisome feature that it might become metastable at energies above 100 billion GeV (gigaelectronvolts). This could mean that the universe could undergo catastrophic vacuum decay, with a bubble of the true vacuum expanding at the speed of light. This could happen at any time and we wouldn’t see it coming.”
Could happen at any time…except that the highest energy that the collider at CERN can achieve is 6,500 GeV — that’s about 1/15 millionth of Hawking’s threshold of danger. The tunnel, magnet, shielding, and other appurtenances required for an accelerator that could create a metastable Higgs boson at 100 billion GeV would weigh considerably more than Earth itself!
Apparently, Hollywood’s glowing biographical movie about the self-absorbed Mr. Hawking is not enough; he feeds Christian and atheist materialists at every opportunity and cannot help but goad silly End Times believers who feed on irrational hysteria. These gullible folk are repeatedly hung out to dry on the latest End Times fad, oblivious to the last one that proved fraudulent. Even the disproven theories of last year, or of 2012 (the Mayan calendar meant the world was going to end in May), or 2010 (the first false CERN prophecy), or 2000 (the Y2K hysteria held that we would return to the dark ages).
What short memories the prophecy-eaters have! P.T. Barnum said that there is a sucker born every minute, and nowhere are they easier to sell than within the body of Christ. About 40 miles from my home, a divorced adulterer pastor (contradiction in terms) markets a new false End Times prophecy book every few years. His Neocon rants simply bolster the ‘War on Terror’ hoax that feeds the U.S. war and ‘intelligence’ industries. Christ said that those who follow these things are evil adulterers: “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it but the sign of Jonah.” (Matt. 16:4)
When will Christians find discernment? Even Jim Bakker — who served hard time in federal prison for several counts of fraud — is back with a new carbon copy of his first wife, selling snake oil as before. Let the End Times roll! Bakker, Hagee & Co are joined by Christian Zionists who use ram’s horns and other Judaizer stage props. Instead of hooting these charlatans off the stage, too many Christians believe the lies and donate to this insidious industry, keeping it alive generation after generation.
As long as a gig pays well, they will ply their wares to the undiscerning church. Why not ask the End Times con artist: if the universe does not collapse into nothingness and/or if CERN does not release millions of demons from the pit of Hell on September 23, 2015 – will you fold up your tent and find an honest job? Of course they will not. Trying to reform a con man is futile; as Joel Osteen, Jim Bakker and countless others attest — the huckster will never retire.
In our age of apocalyptic Hollywood CGI movies, Internet urban legends grow like weeds, eclipsing the gospel of Jesus Christ in millions of homes. This is a mark of palpable evil in the body of Christ. There is truth, goodness and beauty all around us if we will only look — but something in the childish mind makes it seek out the darkness of false CGI worlds and signs from demons.
Americans can be as difficult to reach as any barbarian tribe. Christian, there is work to be done; don’t wait for September 24th. Today is the day to stop thinking and acting as a child; to repent your faith in demons and their false prophets!
Today is the day to embrace a life that brings glory, rather than ridicule, to Jesus Christ.
