On Monday, secretary of State Hillary Clinton tried to shut down the political firestorm surrounding her boss over the terrorist attacks against the consulate in Benghazi, in which a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed. Clinton is now claiming that the buck stops with her regarding who is responsible for security. However, as a Clinton we know that a carefully reading of her words is what is most important and when we do that, well, let’s just say that the buck doesn’t exactly stop with her.
Clinton, who is hiding out in Peru till all this blows over, did and interview with CNN reporter Elise Labott in which she claimed to “take responsibility. This came in response to a question that was asked of her if she thought she was being thrown under the bus.
“Oh of course not (in response to being asked if she was being thrown under the bus). I take responsibility. I’m in charge of the State Department, 60,000 plus people all over the world, 275 posts. The President and the Vice President certainly wouldn’t be knowledgeable about specific decisions that are made by security professionals. They’re the ones, who all the threats and risks and the needs and make a considered decision.”
So let’s look at this, Labott pointed out that this is a blame game, and it is. Clinton says she takes responsibility. Well, what does the word mean? It means you are responsible, but the question we have to ask is, for what? Clinton answers. She is responsible for the State Department, but notice how she frames it.
She presents it as something too big for one person to really manage well. There are 60,000 people under her and 275 posts around the world. She then provides cover for Obama and Biden by stating that they wouldn’t know about the specifics.
Now look, and this is not to defend them at all, but the reality is that no president or State Department head knows everything about everything that goes on. This is why there is delegation. However, Clinton should have been well aware of requests for security in Benghazi and when those requests were made known, she should not have depended upon “security professionals” to analyze the situation. She should have made the decision herself to implement security.
“I take this very personally,” Clinton said. “So we’re going to get to the bottom of it, and then we’re going to do everything we can to work to prevent it from happening again, and then we’re going to work to bring whoever did this to us to justice.”
So, she claims responsibility, which really means nothing in Washington, but there are no consequences for her. She isn’t fired because her being responsible, apparently doesn’t amount to much of anything except to point the blame towards the “security professionals” who are the ones who assess the situation and determine if more security is needed.
Back in July Barack Obama came out and said, “Well, here’s what I know, we were just talking about responsibility and as president of the United States, it’s pretty clear to me that I’m responsible for folks who are working in the federal government and you know, Harry Truman said the buck stops with you.”
“In the wake of an attack like this, in the fog of war, there’s always going to be confusion,” Clinton said. “And I think it is absolutely fair to say that everyone had the same intelligence. Everyone who spoke tried to give the information that they had. As time has gone on, that information has changed. We’ve gotten more detail, but that’s not surprising. That always happens.”
She added, “What I want to avoid is some kind of political gotcha or blame game.”
Labott said Clinton followed in Obama’s footsteps and said basically the same thing during her interview, that “the buck stops here.” If it stops there and Hillary is responsible, then there should be consequences, since the lives of four Americans were lost and she was involved, along with the administration, in painting a picture of how an anti-Islamic video was to blame, even to the point of spending $70,000 of taxpayer money to send apology ads into Pakistan!
No, in all of this it appears the Secretary of State is not letting the buck stop with her, but is passing it on to those who work under her.
