Hundreds of Migrants Storm Border Post with Morocco (Video)

Migrants were filmed storming the border crossing post of Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta and Morocco.

Around 700 migrants, according to the Interior Ministry’s office in Ceuta attempted to scale the 20-foot tall barbed-wire fence at the border post around  Ceuta following a failed attempt to cross the Tarajal post on Thursday.

Police repelled the invaders in both places.

The day before, both Spain and Morocco decided to close the Tarajal post for a week to freight traffic due to migrants attempting to come through.

“They entered at five in the morning running through,” a spokesman for the Central government’s representative office in Ceuta told AFP.

Fox News reports:

The Spanish Red Cross says it has tended to 186 migrants who stormed a pedestrian border post to enter Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco.

Attempts to cross by force at pedestrian border posts are unusual as they are normally heavily policed. The thousands of sub-Saharan African migrants living illegally in Morocco normally try to scale the border fences surrounding Ceuta and Melilla, Spain’s other North African enclave, in their bid to enter Europe.

Ceuta’s Red Cross tweeted that four migrants were taken to a city hospital for injuries after the crossing early Monday.

Spain’s Europa Press news agency said one police officer was injured.

“Footage of the incident broadcast on local television showed the migrants from sub-Saharan Africa sprinting over the border from the Moroccan side while it was still dark,” The Hindu reported.

“Once on Spanish soil, they celebrated, raising their hands in joy to the camera, one man kneeling on the floor,” the reported added.

Both Cueta and Melilla are entry points to Europe from Africa as these are the only land borders with the continent.

While it is common for migrants to either swim along the coast, hide in vehicles or climb tall border fences in order to gain access to Europe, police say that what the migrants engaged in in the video above is far from common.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had any attempt of this kind here,” said a police spokesman.

What’s interesting is that the migrants who actually reached Cueta, were rounded up and taken to a reception center and allowed to apply for asylum in Spain.

This sort of begs the question of why man any border posts in the first place if this is what they are going to do, right?
