In an amazing display of solidarity with their history, more than 200,000 Ukrainians poured out on to the streets of Kiev to sing songs and to praise Jesus as they celebrated the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. (Something we will do here in the USA on October 31st.)
Sergey Rakhuba with Mission Eurasia said, “Many traveled from all four provinces there just to be a part of that celebration, to thank God for the freedom to worship, to thank God for the freedom to preach the Gospel in their country, and to celebrate God’s faithfulness.” Rakhuba continued by explaining how miraculous a display like this is in a nation that was torn apart by communism, “It was so exciting to see on the screen of my computer where I was watching young people with so much joy. They glorify God in the midst of their capital. This was the same place where they were protesting just a few years ago fighting for their freedom. But, also, this is the place where many years ago, Communists would force people to demonstrate and propagate Socialism, Atheism, Communism, and other ‘isms’ in their country.”
Rakhuba acknowledges that Ukraine faces difficult days ahead, but he is praising God for the spread of Christianity in Ukraine. “Ukraine is still in the midst of war. Eastern Ukraine and territories are still occupied by Russian or pro-Russian separatists. Crimea was annexed by Russia. So yes, Ukraine is struggling politically, economically, but Ukraine is striving today spiritually, pleading to God to bless that nation.”

Celebrate 500 years of Protestant history this coming October! Today there are almost 1 billion Protestants in the world, and more than 2 billion who call themselves Christians. The Protestant Reformation may not have been the Roman Catholic Church’s best moment, but there can be no doubt that the Reformation has had a huge, positive impact on our planet. It spread the Christian faith even further throughout the world and it played an important role in the development of the Western World and the spread of Western values.
After the Birth and Resurrection of Christ, the Reformation may be the most impactful moment in World History.
