A man screamed “Allahu Akbar” Saturday afternoon before slashing a pair of female police officers in Belgium with a machete outside a police station.
One of the policewomen sustained little more than minor injuries, but the other female officer is in treatment for serious wounds to the face, the BBC reports.
Since the attack occurred near a police station, other officers were immediately available in the vicinity. One of those officers shot and killed the assailant, but not of course before the assailant was able to hack the two officers with a machete. No one has yet managed to identify the attacker.
The police station is located in the city of Charleroi, just south of Brussels, which was used by jihadists implicated in the Paris attacks late in 2015 as a base to launch operations. The station is now temporarily sealed off.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel issued a statement of support to the victims and the police.
“My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and the police. We are following the situation closely,” he said.
Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon used stronger language in a statement condemning the attack.
“Despicable act in Charleroi. All my support to the two injured officers, as well as their colleagues and families.”
