The Message You Didn’t Hear About at the National Prayer Breakfast: Without Christ, You Will Go To Hell

A lot of focus has been on Barack Obama’s Alinsky-style claim about people committing “terrible deeds in the name of Christ” in order to get a reaction from them at the National Prayer Breakfast. However, a message that has not gotten a wide hearing or reading came from NASCAR Hall of Fame legend Darrell Waltrip as warned those in attendance that even “good people” go to Hell without Jesus Christ.

Keep in mind that Waltrip was standing in the presence of America’s domestic enemy and greatest national security threat, Barack Obama. He also made his statement before a gathering of nearly 4,000 people from 170 countries.

Waltrip declared his Christian faith unashamedly. Though he said that he had viewed himself as a “good guy,” that was just not enough.

“This is what people said about me: They said I was brash, ruthless, pushy, cocky, conceited, aloof, boastful, arrogant and just downright annoying,” Waltrip told the gathering. “And I’ve got to tell you, those were people that liked me, so you can imagine what people that didn’t like me had to say about me.”

“I thought I was a pretty good guy, but folks, let me tell you something. Good guys go to Hell,” he said. “If you don’t know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, if you don’t have a relationship [with Him], if He’s not the master of your life, if you’ve never gotten on your knees and asked Him to forgive you of your sins, [and] you’re just a pretty good guy or a pretty good gal, you’re going to go to Hell. Think about that. I did.”

And how does Waltrip measure himself? What is the standard by which he deemed that his own “goodness” was not pleasing to God? I can tell you. It’s the very thing the modern, American Church has abandoned: The Law of God.

Paul tells us what the purpose of the law is. He writes:

Wherefore, the law, was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. –Galatians 3:24

The law must be used lawfully in order to do this and when it is, it drives men to Christ for salvation from sin. I’m not talking about saving sinners to leave them in their sin, but saving them from their sin (Matt. 1:21). Waltrip communicated this as he spoke of being “different.”

“When the Lord comes into your life, you’re going to be different. You have to be different,” he declared to those gathered. “If He comes into your life and you’re not different, you better go back and try it again, because the Lord changes you.”

Amen! This is where modern Christianity has dropped the ball. They want to hold onto Ephesians 2:8-9, which reads, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

However, these same people abandon what true faith does. It obeys God. As Paul continues in verse 10 of chapter 2, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

Many today have asked God to forgive them of their sins, as Waltrip pointed out, but their lives are unchanged. Just look at Barack Obama’s own “testimony” and you can see that there is absolutely no evidence that Christ has converted his wicked heart. However, the result of a person who is truly converted is that they abandon sin, which is the transgression of the law of God (1 Jn. 3:4). Paul later warned in Galatians 5 those still in their sins:

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. –Gal. 5:19-21

“I got down off my high horse [and] got down on my knees. And Dr. Cortez Cooper and Stevie and I prayed that the Lord would come into my life and forgive me of my sins, and be my lord and savior,” he recalled of his conversion. “And that was the greatest day of my life. That changed everything.”

Having known Dr. Cooper before his death, I can attest to the fact that the law of God was brought to bear in his presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ and that my assessment of that is what Darrell Waltrip experienced.

“The good news is, I’m not that way anymore,” Waltrip said. “You’ve got to get off your high horse and get on your knees and ask for forgiveness. He’s waiting there for you.”

Obviously, this is where the high horse reference came from, but it came from one who was on a high horse looking down on others. In Waltrip’s message, the perspective was one who was on his knees looking up. See the difference?
