NBC Anchor Brian Williams Caught in a Major Lie about His Time in Iraq

Many have seen the evidence that American media is owned by only six corporations that control virtually everything we see, hear or read. Some have probably seen the war propaganda videos from Syria courtesy of CNN and the BBC. And who could forget the infamous CNN video with Charles Jaco in Iraq?

Can you trust any information you receive from the mainstream media?

The answer to that question is a simple yet resounding NO.

Brian Williams is now the latest example in a long line of exposed media liars. In his defense, he claims he misremembered the events, but let’s take a look at what he remembered, on more than one occasion.

So Brian Williams claimed that a helicopter he was traveling on was hit by an RPG in Iraq. It sounds plausible. It certainly makes one appreciate the constant danger that front line war journalists encounter.

Doesn’t it?

Not so fast.

Brian Williams has now been exposed by some of the crew members who were on that Chinook that was threatened by RPG fire. The problem is that Brian Williams was about an hour behind, aboard another Chinook, when it all happened.

Travis J. Tritten reports:

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams admitted Wednesday he was not aboard a helicopter hit and forced down by RPG fire during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, a false claim that has been repeated by the network for years.

Williams repeated the claim Friday during NBC’s coverage of a public tribute at a New York Rangers hockey game for a retired soldier that had provided ground security for the grounded helicopters, a game to which Williams accompanied him. In an interview with Stars and Stripes, he said he had misremembered the events and was sorry.

The admission came after crew members on the 159th Aviation Regiment’s Chinook that was hit by two rockets and small arms fire told Stars and Stripes that the NBC anchor was nowhere near that aircraft or two other Chinooks flying in the formation that took fire. Williams arrived in the area about an hour later on another helicopter after the other three had made an emergency landing, the crew members said.

“I would not have chosen to make this mistake,” Williams said. “I don’t know what screwed up in my mind that caused me to conflate one aircraft with another.”

No one is buying that someone could remember being shot at in Iraq when they were not actually shot at in Iraq.

Michael Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg sums up my feelings very well when he says, “I don’t know what screwed up either, as it seems pretty hard to mistake having your helicopter hit with an RPG versus…not.”

So why did Williams lie?

Don’t drive yourself crazy trying to figure that out. This is what the media does. They lie. They lie to advance agendas. They probably lie for the sake of lying.

Mike O’Keefe, who was a door gunner on the Chinook, that was actually shot at, sums up the disrespect that must be felt by everyone who has had to sit and listen to the lies of Brian Williams for over a decade.

O’Keeffe said the incident has bothered him since he and others first saw the original report after returning to Kuwait.

“Over the years it faded,” he said, “and then to see it last week it was — I can’t believe he is still telling this false narrative.”

According to Stars and Stripes, “Williams and his camera crew were actually aboard a Chinook in a formation that was about an hour behind the three helicopters that came under fire, according to crew member interviews.”

“That Chinook took no fire and landed later beside the damaged helicopter due to an impending sandstorm from the Iraqi desert, according to Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Miller, who was the flight engineer on the aircraft that carried the journalists.”

So I suppose the near miss of getting sand in one’s eyes was a story that didn’t come packed with enough bravado for Williams.

This all happened, or didn’t happen in Williams’ case, in 2003.

So what makes you think that Brian Williams is out there telling the truth, night after night, in 2015?

NBC should immediately fire Brian Williams and anyone else who has allowed this lie to perpetuate. Though the lie may seem inconsequential to some, I don’t see it that way.

What else has NBC been lying about over the years?

And for goodness sake, those who were there deserve more respect than a flaky journalist taking credit for facing the dangers that our finest experience on a regular basis.

Shame on you Brian Williams.
