NC Pastor Preaches Truth at Baccalaureate Service – Gets Called a Bully

Many have never attended a Baccalaureate service.  And just as many, if not more, have no clue what it is meant to be or why it is performed.  One of the reasons for this lack of knowledge is that these kinds of events are no longer in style.  It is no longer something that people do.  So, when a preacher comes into a small town school in southern North Carolina and commends the Word of God to the students, people do not like it very much.  In fact, when he calls out certain sins, people are offended.

WBTV reports:

WBTV 3 News, Weather, Sports, and Traffic for Charlotte, NC

Parents contacted WBTV, angry over an “anti-gay” message delivered by a pastor during Kings Mountain High School’s annual baccalaureate service.

People are angry that a Christian pastor gave a Christian message to their non-Christian children.  They thought that this man was to be a voice of encouragement and cheer these seniors into the real world with a, “You have all you need to succeed so go and get ’em!” message.  But, when the students were told that their souls were in danger, some parents called the local news to voice their anger.

WBTV continues:

(W)hat Carpenter calls truth, is being summed up as something else to Kings Mountain parent, Chuck Wilson.

“This is bullying. Bullying doesn’t have to happen from the back hallway of a school or a back parking lot. It can happen from the pulpit, it can happen from the stage,” Wilson said.

It would be laughable if Mr. Wilson were not serious, therefore it is sad.  The first thing that someone should tell Chuck is the definition of the word Baccalaureate.

Merriam-Webster defines it this way:

a :  a sermon to a graduating class

b :  the service at which this sermon is delivered

This means that these seniors voluntarily went to a service.  This was not meant to be a “Ra! Ra!” Service.  This was a preaching service.  They went to hear a man of God tell them the Word of God.  So, if they heard something they did not like, they should have known what they were getting into before they went.  Chuck’s complaint is akin to going to a movie you have not researched, and then complaining about the content.  These young people begin their adult lives in two days.  They probably are more capable to use Google than I and Chuck together.

The second thing that someone needs to tell Chuck is that he either has no clue what real bullying is or he misunderstood what happened at Kings Mountain High School’s Baccalaureate Service.  To be bullied is to be made afraid and humiliated by physical threats and violence.

Merriam-Webster helps us again:

a blustering browbeating person; especially: one habitually cruel to others who are weaker

This was one sermon, by one man.  This was a one-time event, which probably only lasted an hour.  Bully would be a stretch if had preached a three week series on the topic and they were forced to attend.  If we have become so weak as to think that because someone tells you the truth they are a bully, then I am wrong Homosexuality is not the biggest problem here.  You see, we have become so weak that we cannot stand to be told the thing we want to do is wrong.  We have abandoned the idea that there is such a thing as truth.

Finally, Chuck should be told that Pastor Scott Carpenter would have been unfaithful to his call and vocation if he had not spoken the truth.  He saw that the biggest problem these young people were facing as they left the shelter of their families and the school was the depravity of the world.  They needed to hear that there is such a place as Hell and that they were in danger of going there.

Pastor Carpenter has been appointed by God a watchman, and if he remains silent, then the blood of those around him will be on his hands (Ezek. 33:1-9).  I praise God for this faithful watchman; he has delivered his life.
