The rest of the nation doesn’t ordinarily allow the Libertarians among us to say “I told you so”, but these last few weeks have been anything but ordinary.
Our nation is under threat of being torn asunder by the mainstream media and their need for conflict. They thrive on the friction that they create between Americans by dividing them into left-and-right, Republican-and-Democrat, with Americans tuning in to pay attention to the news, far more often when the news is bad.
CNN and others have no real interest in good news, and their ability to whip Americans into a frenzy is a surefire way to keep their cash cow milking.
But this tactic is beginning to backfire as a growing number of Americans grow ever-more wary of the role of the government here in the United States. Instead of growing apart down party lines as the media has been pushing for, We The People are quickly learning that the real chasm is between our ruling class and the general public.
Amid House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, a near-record-high 34% of Americans cite the government, poor leadership or politicians as the most important problem currently facing the U.S. This latest reading marks an 11-percentage-point increase since September and is just one point shy of the all-time high Gallup has recorded for mentions of government, from February, after the government shutdown ended.
Meanwhile, Americans’ satisfaction with the way things are going in the U.S. has fallen back to 28%, primarily because Republicans are less likely to be satisfied. Satisfaction overall has returned to the level seen during and shortly after the nation’s longest federal government shutdown last winter. While partisans’ satisfaction with the country’s direction differs greatly, Democrats and Republicans each view the government as the nation’s top problem.
This sudden turn comes as the Democratic Party continues to hold up legislative business in the pursuit of President Trump’s impeachment, catching criticism from all sides of the political spectrum over the stagnation.
