The majority of Senate Republicans got together to write a letter to the leaders of Iran, reminding them that President Obama would only be President for another 2 years and that it was indeed likely that the next President would be a Republican.
“It has come to our attention while observing your nuclear negotiations with our government that you may not fully understand our constitutional system … Anything not approved by Congress is a mere executive agreement,” the senators wrote. “The next president could revoke such an executive agreement with the stroke of a pen and future Congresses could modify the terms of the agreement at any time.”
President Obama didn’t appreciate the backhanded assault on his unpopular negotiations with Iran. In fact, he was so perturbed that he actually dared to insinuate that Senate Republicans were working hand-in-hand with hardline Iranians to scuttle the negotiations.
“I think it’s somewhat ironic to see some members for Congress wanting to make common cause with the hard-liners in Iran. It’s an unusual coalition… I think what we’re going to focus on right now is actually seeing whether we’re going to get a deal or not. Once we do, if we do, we’ll be able to make the case to the American people, and I’m confident we’ll be able to implement it.”
What President Obama fails to realize is that it matters not which faction he works with in Iran; they are all out to end Israel and hurt the USA. The Iranians he is dealing with have spent his entire Presidency undermining the authority of their neighboring governments, increasing their influence on the region, and working to build a nuclear weapon. So it doesn’t seem like the people he’s dealing with are all that moderate to begin with…
Maybe, instead of working to appease the Iranians, President Obama should be working with our allies to weaken them and make them less of a concern in our uncertain world.
