Rand Paul: Obama Has "King Complex"

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) took to Fox News’ “Hannity” show following the President’s Wednesday press conference and put forth the word that he will be introducing legislation to nullify Barack Obama’s executive action on firearms. The Senator said that Obama has a “king complex” and he will be introducing legislation to the Senate next week that will nullify anything the President put forward that “smacks of legislation.”

“Our founding fathers were very concerned about having a separation of powers,” the Kentucky Senator began. “They didn’t want to let the President become a king and so they wanted to say that Congress was the one to legislate, not the President.”

“So we have a bill that we are going to introduce early next week and in this bill we will nullify anything the President does that smacks of legislation,” said Paul. “There are several of the executive orders that appear as if he is writing new law. That cannot happen. The court struck Clinton down for trying this and I’m afraid that President Obama may have this ‘king complex’ sort of developing and we’re going to make sure that it doesn’t happen.”

Host Sean Hannity pointed out this was not the first time Obama has usurped the Constitution. He pointed out that he used military strikes in Libya without Congressional approval, the appointments while the Senate was in recess. He also pointed out that since he could not get the Dream Act passed that he used an executive order to change immigration policy and not enforce the law, but allow illegal immigrants to remain in the country. Obama used the reconciliation process to push Obamacare through. Obama also told his Department of Justice to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act, which is the law of the land. He also altered welfare reform and the contraceptive mandate being pushed through. All of this was done without Congressional approval.

Paul answered that all of this is unconstitutional. He said, “There is a history of this arrogance, because with regard to environmental extremism, Cap and Trade; he couldn’t get Cap and Trade through Congress and now he’s trying to do it through regulatory fiat. So there’s a lot of precedent for this, but it’s been a long battle that we’ve been losing gradually.”

“Even Republican presidents have usurped their executive privilege to exert more authority than the Constitution gave them,” Paul continued, “but you know our founders looked to Montesquieu and Montesquieu wrote, ‘There can be no liberty when you combine the executive and legislative powers.’ You have separation of powers so the powers check and balance each other and I’m very concerned about this president. FDR had a little bit of this ‘king complex’ also. We had to limit FDR finally because he served so many terms that I think he would have ruled in perpetuity. I’m very concerned about this president garnering so much power and arrogance that he thinks he can do whatever he wants.”
