Remember What the Democrats Did with Obamacare that Led to the Government Shutdown?

Democrats and the White House want to put the blame for the shutdown of the Federal Government on the House Republicans, especially those who align themselves with the Tea Party. (I wonder if “blame” is the correct word – perhaps praise would be better?)

At the center of the debate is President Obama’s landmark legislation “The Affordable Health Care Act” (a.k.a. ObamaCare).

What I find incredibly arrogant and self-serving, coming from the Democrat spin doctors (and their willing accomplices in the media), are the facts surrounding the passage of this legislation and their short term memory of the shenanigans they had to employ in order to ram through the two thousand plus page law (which no one read, but Nancy Pelosi claims they did) in order to get it to the President’s desk for his signature.

Lest we forget, ObamaCare was not (and still is not) popular with the American people. Every poll declared this truth. But the Dem’s won the presidency in 2008 and already had control of the House and the Senate since 2006. Elections, we were told, had consequences.

The Senate required sixty votes to get the bill passed and they had it. This long established rule appeared to make the upcoming debate over health care a sure thing.

Even though the Republicans were in the minority, they were promised they would be invited to the negotiating table and the proceedings would be broadcast live on C-Span (see video below). Needless to say, this was a bold-faced lie.

Alas, as a result of the death of Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), the nation’s hope of stopping the Federal Governments attempts to take over one sixth of the nation’s economy dangled on a Republican hopeful who was vying for the vacant Senate seat. Much to the surprise of many, Scott Brown won and the sixty votes needed to pass socialized medicine fell short in the Senate by one vote.

The Democrats were in a tizzy. They were so close, they could almost taste it. But now their dreams of an emerging socialist utopia were dashed. How could they overcome this defeat? Simple! They were in the majority, so they reasoned, and so they broke continuity with Senate rules deciding that a simple majority was all that was needed (Elections no longer had consequences)! ObamaCareLess, as I like to call it, became the unpopular law of the land.

If the Democrats had been honest and forthright back in 2010, then perhaps the events of today would not be unfolding. I, for one, hope the Republicans will break with their compromising past, and remember these events and the shameful way the people of this country and themselves were treated back then. My message to Speaker Boehner – don’t give them an inch! Elections no longer had consequences!
