Second Grader Suspended for Carrying Invisible Gun …. No Really

We have seen the ridiculous reactions of schools in America who are full of gunophobes. We’ve seen little boys suspended for using pencils as pretend guns on the playground. We’ve seen one young man arrested for wearing a NRA t-shirt. There has even been a little boy who is deaf that used sign language for his name and the sign he gave for his name was too much like the sign for gun. Even talking about guns or eating your breakfast pastry in the shape of a gun can get kids suspended. Well, now this one takes the cake. Now a second grader has been suspended for merely using his finger as a pretend gun. In other words, it’s an invisible gun.

WKMG reports:

Bonnie Bennett said her son, Jordan, was suspended Friday at Harmony Community School in Osceola County after playing cops and robbers with another student.”There was nothing in his hand.  He used his thumb and index finger,” said Bennett. “It was a game.  He made no threatening advances or threats to harm anyone. No words were said.”Bennett said she would have been satisfied with some form of punishment but is worried now that since he’s been suspended, her son will be seen as a violent child.”They took a child that has never been in trouble before and went to the extreme,” said Bennett. “A child that has no history of violence is now classified as a violent offender.”

A violent offender? Seriously, the people in these school systems that think this way should be in mental institutes, not in public education, but again, we are letting the nuts run the nuthouse.

Another young boy, who was also playing with Jordan, was also suspended.

The Osceola County School District claims that it wasn’t a game. While unable to comment on the specifics because of alleged confidentiality, a school representative said that after reviewing the incident, Jordan violated school student conduct.

I’ve heard this one before, haven’t you? We made a stupid decision, but yeah the boy’s finger was a real threat to the students around him so in order to justify ourselves we’ll claim confidentiality. Sounds like CYA to me.

Heritage adds:

These overreactions would be laughable if they weren’t such serious business. In the wake of the Newtown massacre, a suspension involving an “act of violence” might just doom a child’s future academic and career prospects before they really begin.

Expecting kids not to get creative with food or play “cops and robbers” is tantamount to asking them, well, not to be kids. Certainly, teachers need to be able to prevent kids from disrupting class, but does anyone really believe that these decisions are about disruption rather than politically correct concerns about promoting a “gun-free culture”?

Jordan’s mother has some backbone though, and she is seeking to remove the suspension from her son’s school record.

“I’m prepared to go to court if I have to because this is wrong. It’s wrong for my son and any other child if they’re faced with the same thing because of a game,” Bennett said.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of these kids. My goodness, I remember running around the yard and house playing army, cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians ( we didn’t have cowboys and muslims then) and all the while using pretend and play weapons. There was never any malice in our play, only having fun.

As Andrea has written, “Taking a play hammer and beating it on a play tool set is a boy thing to do.  Playing with a pretend gun seems to be innately born into them.  In fact, even some mothers I know who decidedly attempted to instill femininity into their boys by removing any ‘male dominated’ play items, have found their toddler and preschool sons acting out fight scenes and using their fingers to simulate pretend guns in imaginative play.  This is with zero exposure to the ‘violence’ that gun-haters like to pretend is the source.”

There is nothing wrong with any of these boys. They are not threatening anyone. They are not harming anyone. The real problem in these situations resides in the adults: School officials and parents that tolerate it from them. I say, good for Jordan’s mom for standing up and letting her voice be heard and holding these Marists feet to the fire. These people work for her, not the other way around!
