Sen. Sessions: No Budget, No Debt-Ceiling Increase

Senator Jeff Session (R-AL) in attempting a new strategy to get a budget to pass the United States Senate, said that lawmakers should hold out on increasing the debt ceiling until there is a budget that is passed by the Democrat controlled legislative body.

Because of the fiscal cliff “deal”, Congress will have to deal with similar financial disasters within the next two to three months, including the budget resolution, the debt ceiling and sequestration (automatic federal spending cuts).

Many Republicans are looking to use the debt ceiling to get spending cuts, which as I’ve pointed out are not real cuts at all. Sessions wants to use it as leverage to finally produce a budget. Under Barack Obama, no budget has been passed.

Congress is required to pass a budget every year under Federal law. Somehow, in stating that I’m seeing an argument about gun control laws. Anyone else noticing it too? I digress. While the Republican controlled House has passed passed annual budgets, the Democrat controlled Senate hasn’t passed one since April of 2009.

Sessions spokesman Stephen Miller said Monday, “If President Obama wants another loan from the American people, then his party controlling the Senate owes them a budget plan detailing how their money will be spent. There is growing support for incorporating this legal and moral principle into the debt ceiling.”

Obama, in his weekly address, sounded just like he did during the fiscal cliff talks, uncompromising. One thing that I will not compromise over is whether or not Congress should pay the tab for a bill they’ve already racked up. The last time Congress threatened this course of action, our entire economy suffered for it.”

Personally, I would like to see the Republicans get a budget through the Senate, make real cuts to spending and lower, not raise the debt and the debt ceiling, but with the way things look, it appears that we are not going to get any of that.
