Home » Senator David Vitter Blasts Obama & Congress Over Obamacare Bailout of Congress & Staffers
As most everyone has heard, Congress has exempted themselves from the current health care law that is Obamacare even though the original provision required the lawmakers and their staff to obtain coverage through the exchanges just like regular Americans. Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) has called this action “particularly offensive and obnoxious.”
According to CNSnews.com:
Senator David Vitter (R-La.) has urged President Barack Obama and Congressional leaders to overturn a recent decision allowing members of Congress and their staffs to continue receiving a taxpayer-funded allowance to help cover their health insurance premiums, and even exempting some from enrolling in health care exchanges under the president’s health care law.
In a letter sent to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Vitter said that “the Obamacare statute states very clearly that all Members of Congress and their staffs are to procure their health insurance through the Obamacare Exchange,” and “no ordinary American….buying on the Exchange would receive any government subsidy, much less one worth $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for a family, under the OPM rule for Congress only.”
The original provision in the law, offered by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), required lawmakers and their staffs to enroll in the exchanges just like their fellow Americans. However, the OPM (and reportedly leadership in both parties) came to believe that the amendment did not bar them from continuing to receive federal funding via taxpayers.
Currently, members of Congress, their staff, the President, Vice President, and their political appointees all receive generous health care benefits through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Plan (FEHBP). Under Obamacare, members of Congress and their staffs were expected to fully enroll in the health care exchanges, a central component of Obama’s health care law.
As it stands now, the exemption means the Washington crew will be keeping their FEHBP benefits. But, Sen. Vitter is urging Obama and Congress to overturn this decision and stand with the American people by enrolling through the healthcare exchanges instead of treating themselves like a “higher, selected ruling class.”
Some in Washington had threatened to leave their post over the cost of health care premiums under the Obamacare exchanges. In a report on July 29th by the New York Times, cost for an individual plan ranged from $5,000 to $11,000 per year.
Vitter closed his letter demanding that those elected abide by the same law as Americans are “being forced to live with” until Obamacare is repealed. CNSnews.com reported Vitter also stating in his letter, “the recent maneuverings inside the Beltway are precisely why the American people rightly despises Congress. OPM’s solution demanded by leading members of Congress and crafted behind closed doors is being viewed as an act of self-dealing special treatment – and rightfully so.”
Vitter pressed Obama, in a similar letter, to “reverse the change himself” instead of Congress having to pass legislation to reverse the decision, which Vitter states he plans to pursue after the August recess.
Sen. Vitter has certainly hit the nail on the head with this one. Yes, the American public has been led to partake of pig slop while the elite partake of filet mignon, once again. Yes, everyone, including those inside the Beltway, should abide by the law, no exceptions. Yes, these closed door back room deals are viewed as self-serving, specialized treatment that only nobility or kings would contemplate perpetrating against “subjects.”
With the IRS slated to “manage” – or mismanage as the case may be – Obamacare, the ruling class in America will not have to suffer any repercussions or “punishment” should they not comply with the law. How convenient. There’s nothing like being exempt from the law with impunity. There will be Americans who still cannot afford this unaffordable healthcare if there are companies willing to participate in the exchanges. Besides fines, what other punishment will the IRS have in store for those individuals? You can bet they won’t be exempt because of lack of affordability like Congress. Wonder what is in store for those who choose to be civilly disobedient?
While some Americans struggle to comply, like the good little sheeple they are, with an unconstitutional law, Congress and the rest of Washington remain comfortably partaking of taxpayer subsidized healthcare plans through FEHBP. As it has been said before, this is how nobility acts, not servants of the people. Before long, America will be kicking some “royal” asses, one way or another.
