Home » Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Buhl Obeys Constitution as He Encourages the First & Second Amendment Among Protestors

Deputy Paul Buhl of the Oakland County, Michigan Sheriff’s Department was called out to due to some men peacefully protesting on the side of the road. The gentlemen were legally open carrying their firearms and holding homemade signs. What happens next should result in a lot of calls of praise for Deputy Buhl.

According to Nicholas Somberg, 24, who is a second year law student and also posted the video, “We saw the OC Sheriff car pull up, so we all took out our camera-phones right away, anticipating trouble. This officer gets out of his car, waves to us, and walks right over. He shakes all of our hands, introduces himself, and states his purpose for walking over to us. Somebody got scared and called.”

“He never asked us to disarm, never threatened us, and never asked for our names or identification,” Somberg added. “I think I can speak for everyone in the group that it was an honor to meet this man. This is what we need to see from police officers everywhere!”

Somberg believes Buhl is a hero. I agree.

Mr. Somberg posted his video one week after another encounter with an unlawful police officer, including several of his buddies.

Fox News Detroit recently brought Somberg on to debate the issues of gun control against former SWAT officer and gun store owner Bill Kucyk.

Fox 2 News Headlines

Though Somberg broke no laws during his protest, Kucyk believes his protest does more harm than good when it comes to advocating the Second Amendment.

The Fox News anchor pointedly asked Kucyk, “Is open carry good? Should we ban it?”

“I don’t think we should ban it, but I’m not an advocate for it,” said Kucyk. “It’s a safety concern for somebody carrying the gun because somebody could kill you just to get your gun.”

Hmmm…. Following that logic, someone could kill you to get your sneakers, sunglasses, money, car; you name it. So don’t have those things with you when you go out. Does that make any sense?

The anchor then asks Somberg, “Aren’t you giving open carry people a bad name?”

“Just say I’m Nick Somberg, here I am. I live at blah, blah, blah, here’s my ID, and I’m doing my job. The cops would have been gone, just like that.”

“I don’t represent all gun owners, about the same as, because I have a cell-phone I don’t represent all cell-phone owners,” replied Somberg.

I think Mr. Somberg is absolutely correct. Look, I think open carry is not the wisest choice. I prefer concealed. However, the right to keep and bear arms and the responsibility we have to do so should not be infringed.

As for Deputy Buhl, I think a pat on the back is due for executing his duties without violating his oath. Too often, we focus on law enforcement that does the wrong thing, as we should. However, if you believe as I do that it also is a good thing to encourage those who do their job well, then perhaps you might want to contact the Sheriff’s Office, as I did, and commend Deputy Buhl for his service.
