Well after all the fiasco over Todd Akin, some Republicans are finally coming to his aid. Earlier in the week Newt Gingrich stepped up to help campaign for Akin in Missouri. Now Rick Santorum and Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) are putting their support behind Akin’s challenge to Democrat Claire McCaskill.
The Associated Press reports,
Former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum and Sen. Jim DeMint, a tea party favorite, announced support for Akin’s challenge to Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. They called Akin a “principled conservative” — the same phrase Akin uses to describe himself at campaign events.
“If Republicans are to win back the Senate and stop President Obama’s liberal agenda, we must defeat Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri,” Santorum and DeMint said in a joint statement. They added: “We support Todd Akin and hope freedom-loving Americans in Missouri and around the country will join us so we can save our country from fiscal collapse.”
Akin said the Santorum and DeMint endorsements “are huge for our campaign and show that real conservative leaders are stepping up, because they know how important it is that we defeat Claire McCaskill and take back the Senate.”
“You can tell these endorsements are ‘enthusiastic’ just by the way these Republicans waited until they were stuck with Todd Akin to finally support him,” said McCaskill spokesman Erik Dorey sarcastically.
Akin came under attack from both Democrats and Republicans over a comment concerning rape earlier in the year. Many in the GOP asked him to step down, including the party’s nominee Mitt Romney. Akin is finally receiving support from big names in spite of the fact that RNC Chair Reince Priebus vowed that the RNC wasn’t sending a dime to him.
Akin has been a strong pro-life advocate and for “conservatives” to turn on him the way they have over the use of one word is just appalling. I’m glad to see some guys stepping up to the plate to offer help in winning the Senate seat. One thing is for sure, since the RNC isn’t putting any money into Akin, they won’t own him.
