What's it like to be Smeared by the SPLC? Ask former Vanderbilt Law Professor Carol Swain

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has done some good work in the past. Sadly, much of that should now be forgotten because for the last 20+ years the SPLC has become a tool of leftist agitation and anti-conservative bigotry.

The SPLC no longer cares about truth, and justice and sadly seems to be more about winning political battles, tearing down half of the nation, and making itself big money.

The SPLC has turned into a fundraising powerhouse, recording more than $50 million in contributions and $328 million in net assets on its 2015 Form 990, the most recently available tax form from the nonprofit. SPLC’s Form 990-T, its business income tax return, from the same year shows that they have “financial interests” in the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, and Bermuda. No information is available beyond the acknowledgment of the interests at the bottom of the form.

However, the Washington Free Beacon discovered forms from 2014 that shed light on some of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s transfers to foreign entities.

The SPLC’s Form 8865, a Return of U.S. Persons With Respect to Certain Foreign Partnerships, from 2014 shows that the nonprofit transferred hundreds of thousands to an account located in the Cayman Islands.

Hiding money isn’t the worst thing that the SPLC has been about in recent years. Their “Hate Map” has become famous as a way to identify “hate groups” scattered across the country. The only problem is that the map is riddled with misinformation and many of the individuals and groups listed don’t actually hate anyone.

Even worse, on several different occasions, delusional violent leftists have admitted to using the SPLC’s information as the means for choosing victims to attack.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), the activists behind the “hate” list, lumps Christian lobby groups like the Family Research Council (FRC) and the legal giant Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which has argued and won numerous cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, in with the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis.

Its infamous “hate list” directed Floyd Lee Corkins to FRC’s Washington office, where he shot a security guard and planned to massacre the group’s staff. He told police he targeted FRC because the SPLC labeled them “anti-gay.”

One of the individuals smeared by the SPLC is the brilliant former Vanderbilt Law Professor Carol Swain. Swain recently penned an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal explaining what it was like to be falsely accused of hate-mongering by the radical leftwing SPLC.

Later, she appeared with Tucker Carlson on Fox News to discuss her piece and the smear-machine that is the SPLC.

Carol Swain: I’m not surprised. I had criticized them first. And I was criticizing them because I saw that they were engaging in mission creep. They had lost sight of their original purpose. And they had started going after conservatives. At the time it was immigration restrictionists. I wrote a blog in Sept. 2009, and about six weeks later, my photograph was in my local paper, on the front page, with a headline that I was an apologist for white supremacy. So they retaliated.

Tucker Carlson: Did you say anything nice about white supremacists in your piece?

Carol Swain: It had nothing to do with white supremacists. There was a film that I reviewed. The title of the film was ‘A Conversation About Race.’ And I gave it an enthusiastic review, because I felt that on college and university campuses, that there was a debate that was not usually heard in social science classes, and that was the perspective of whites who felt that they were being beaten up by accusations of racism.
